Training Programme for Menopause Care

This programme has been developed in conjunction with the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) and offers two levels of training:

A. Basic certificate

Aimed at:

  • GPs
  • GPwSIs
  • Doctors working in family planning/sexual health /community gynaecology settings
  • Middle or staff grade gynaecologists

B. Advanced certificate

Aimed at doctors wishing to lead a menopause service

Training Programme Structure

The training programme requires attendance at an approved menopause theory course.

The two day theory course is case based, practical and interactive. It can be taken alone but does not signify competence to practice. This might be suitable for:

  • Any interested GP or sexual health doctor
  • Specialist and practice nurses working regularly to provide women’s health advice and management.
  • Holders of the DFSRH wishing to update their knowledge of reproductive healthcare

The hand book of the British Menopause Society is the core text.

Upcoming BMS theory courses can be found at Forthcoming meetings.  Other relevant courses may be found on the FSRH website.

Please contact for further information.

Practical training

A theory course must be attended within the first year of practical training and practical training must be completed within 3 years of the date of attendance at the theory course.

Training is supervised by a principal trainer who will conduct a learning needs assessment and plan a suitable, individualised programme to ensure that trainees meet all the required competencies of the Curriculum [PDF, 364KB]. Skills training, competencies agreed and all relevant tutorials and discussions are then recorded in a Menopause Logbook.

When the required competencies are achieved a Certificate in Menopause Care can be awarded. This indicates the ability to practice to the standard required to work within an established clinic or in primary care.  Further training, a programme project and achievement of a higher level of competency can lead to the award of an Advanced Certificate in Menopause Care which would recognise the ability to lead a Menopause Service.

Membership of the British Menopause Society is encouraged before a certificate can be granted in order to keep up-to-date.

Principal Trainers

Principal Trainers are approved by the FSRH. They have both extensive experience of working in the field of menopause and either Training the Trainers or FSRH registered trainer qualifications.

The FSRH holds a list of approved trainers.  Please log on to the FSRH website (you will need to be registered on the website) or you can contact the Education Development Officer on or 020 7724 5675.
