New WHC Fact Sheet: Hormone blood tests in the menopause transition

Women’s Health Concern (WHC), the patient arm of the British Menopause Society (BMS), has published a new fact sheet examining the role of hormone blood tests in the menopause transition. The resource builds on the BMS Tool for Clinicians on the measurement of serum estradiol in the menopause transition, published in July 2025, and provides healthcare professionals with a resource they can share directly with their patients.

The fact sheet was authored by Dr Clare Spencer and Dr Heather Currie, and the BMS is grateful for their contribution to this important area of clinical practice.

Hormone blood tests are frequently requested or discussed in the context of perimenopause and menopause management. However, for women in the average menopause age range of 45 to 55 years, such tests are generally not required to diagnose the perimenopause or menopause, monitor hormone replacement therapy (HRT), manage menopause symptoms, or address the long-term health consequences of menopause.

This fact sheet sets out the clinical rationale behind this position clearly and accessibly.

Diagnosing and managing the perimenopause and menopause should be based on menstrual pattern (where applicable), symptom profile and impact, and personal and family medical history. Clinical consultation and access to evidence-based resources remain the most effective tools for supporting women through this transition.
