The board of trustees of the British Menopause Society (BMS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Kathy Abernethy as Director of Clinical Practice, a new role within the Society.
Kathy Abernethy is a founding member of the British Menopause Society, having joined its first council in 1990. She has since served as Chair and is a current trustee of the Society. Kathy led an award-winning NHS menopause service, then became clinical lead for a digital menopause platform. She has written two books on menopause, including Menopause: The One-Stop Guide, which was highly commended in the BMA Book Awards 2019. More recently, alongside her nurse education programme, she has worked with the BMS as Resources Advisor, supporting the development and review of clinical resources, a role that has now been extended into a permanent position with broader responsibility for clinical governance and communications across the Society.
“For the whole of my career in menopausal health, the BMS has been part of my professional life,” Kathy said. “I am pleased now to partner with the Society on this new initiative.”
As Director of Clinical Practice, Kathy will provide clinical advice, guidance and support to the BMS executive team, board of trustees and medical advisory council. Working with colleagues across the Society, she will help ensure that BMS and Women’s Health Concern (WHC) clinical resources for healthcare professionals and the public remain accurate, evidence-based and subject to robust governance.
Janice Rymer, BMS Chair, welcomed the appointment: “Kathy’s appointment as Director of Clinical Practice reflects the significant contribution she has already made to the Society’s clinical resources and governance. This new role will strengthen our ability to provide healthcare professionals and the public with accurate, evidence-based guidance on menopause and post reproductive health.”
This appointment does not change the role of the board of trustees or the council, whose clinical expertise and oversight remain central to the Society’s work.
We congratulate Kathy on her appointment and look forward to her continued contribution to the Society.
