Early and premature menopause associated with increased cardiovascular risk, major global study confirms

A large multinational cohort study published in Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Women’s Health (Marschner et al., 2026) followed 111,619 women across 26 countries over a median of 14.6 years.

Premature and early menopause were consistently associated with a greater risk of major cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction, fatal cardiovascular disease, and stroke, across all regions and ethnic groups studied.

Mr Haitham Hamoda, British Menopause Society, said women with premature and early menopause had approximately a 30% greater risk of major cardiovascular events after adjusting for risk factors. Professor Janice Rymer, BMS Chair, said the findings confirm the need to identify these women and proactively manage modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.

This new BMS Tool provides evidence-based guidance to help clinicians differentiate menopausal cognitive symptoms from early neurodegenerative disease, and highlights that sleep, stress, and other health conditions may also contribute.

Misinformation about perimenopause on social media ‘putting women at risk’

A recent article in The Guardian, featuring Dr Paula Briggs, BMS trustee, highlighted concerns that misinformation about perimenopause on social media may be putting women at risk of unintended pregnancies, unnecessary medication, and missed diagnoses.

This issue was also addressed during a lecture by Dr James Larkin on misinformation online at the BMS 35th Annual Scientific Conference. The Society continues to encourage healthcare professionals to remain alert to the impact of misinformation on patient understanding and behaviour.
